MX Linux 23, the latest stable version of the popular operating system, is now available for download. This release is built on the sturdy foundation of Debian 12 “Bookworm” and MX repositories. Just as with previous versions, MX Linux 23 defaults to sysVinit while keeping systemd as an optional choice for installed systems. One of the most noticeable changes in this release is the revamped live boot menus, featuring a more prominent “check media” function. This new feature offers an automatic media check before proceeding to boot, thus providing a smoother user experience. MX Linux 23 brings with it an array of major desktop versions, including Xfce 4.18, Fluxbox 1.3.7, and KDE/Plasma 5.27. These upgrades are sure to offer a range of choices to cater to the diverse preferences of users. Accessibility remains a key focus with all releases now featuring the Orca screen reader and a screen magnifier tool. The two desktop environments, Fluxbox and Xfce, utilize the magnus screen magnifier, while KDE/Plasma employs kmag. Although Orca does not appear in the menus due to Debian’s packaging, it can be manually launched and is configurable in KDE’s integrated accessibility settings. MX Tools have seen a number of updates in this release, with bug fixes and enhancements across many MX applications. An exciting addition is a new application called “User Installed Packages”. Available on both MX-21 and MX-23, this application generates a list of packages installed by a user on one system, and enables that list to be imported onto another system, streamlining migration between major versions. The widely-used MX Snapshot tool has been improved to help users better customize their snapshot boot options. In addition, many MX-Tweak options have been updated to accommodate polkit changes, expanded theming options on Xfce and Fluxbox, and new configuration items. Another update is that MX-Updater can now be configured to use nala as a backend rather than the standard apt. Furthermore, all releases have transitioned from pulseaudio to pipewire and wireplumber. Notably, the UFW firewall is now enabled by default. This change may impact some users, particularly with printer setups. Fluxbox users will be pleased with many new configuration options, including special “appfinder” configurations for rofi. The Fluxbox release relies less on Xfce applications, retaining only Thunar as the file manager. For the KDE/Plasma crowd, several tweaks to the settings have been implemented to handle new configuration options available in Plasma 5.27. MX-23 beta 2 is now available for testing. MX-23 is built from debian 12 “bookworm” and MX repositories. As in past releases, the MX will default to sysVinit but systemd remains an option for installed systems. This release builds upon beta 1, and includes all bug fixes and changes to date, including default wallpapers and theming. As with beta 1, the Installer now supports swapfiles as well as swap partitions. The “regular” auto installation will default to swapfiles. There are many other installer changes, including gui adjustments, setting of some debconf value to make legacy grub-pc updates more seamless, various fixes for grub install functions and cleanup of “dump” entries that might be clogging up a user’s nvram. There is also additional help guidance right in the installer gui. We are also interested in testing of the –oem option, which allows for user creation on first boot after installation. KNOWN ISSUE: the –oem switch doesn’t currently work but will be addressed with an update. The live boot menus now have a more obvious “check media” function right in the top level menu. The media will be checked and boot will continue if things look good. KNOWN ISSUE: selecting catalan in the live boot menu’s language option will get you czech. We are looking into it. Major Desktop versions Xfce 4.18 Fluxbox 1.3.7 KDE/plasma 5.27 Accessibility: All release now include orca screen reader and a screen magnifier tool. Fluxbox and Xfce have magnus screen magnifier, and KDE/plasma uses kmag. At this time due to debian’s orca packaging, orca does not appear in the menus but can be launched manually. In particular orca is configurable in KDE’s integrated accessibility settings. Xfce is using xfce4-screensaver for screen locking chores instead of light-locker. This is proving to be more stable for some users. MX Tools: Many mx apps have been updated with bug fixes and enhancements. All tools now launch with individual policy kit configurations rather than using the blanket mx-pkexec from past releases. mx-pkexec is not preinstalled. The very popular MX Snapshot has received a lot of attention to help users customize their snapshot boot options while automatically filtering out option that might prevent the created live system from starting up on different machines. MX-Updater is back to using apt for a default backend, as nala turned out to have unforeseen issues. All releases use pipewire & wireplumber instead of pulseaudio. UFW firewall is enabled by default. There are many new configuration options for the fluxbox release, as well as special “appfinder” configurations for rofi (replacing xfce4-appfinder). the fluxbox release relies much less on Xfce applications, but retains thunar for the file manager. mx-tweak’s theme module now has support for theming on fluxbox. The KDE/Plasma received several tweaks to the settings to deal with new configuration options available in plasma 5.27. Root actions remain in dolphin, including root dolphin instances via the root service menu actions. MX Linux is a desktop-oriented Linux distro based on Debian’s Stable branch, including the Xfce as a default desktop. However, the desktop environment has a slightly modified layout, with the main panel moved to the left side. As a result, it is a perfect mixture of simplicity, ease of use, and appeal to more seasoned users. In addition, the distro also comes with Conky preinstalled, which enhances the appealing appearance of the working environment. Today, MX Linux’s devs released the second update of the 21 “Wildflower” series, so let’s see what’s new. MX Linux 21.2 Highlights MX Linux 21.2 builds on the Debian 11.4 base focusing on bug fixes and application updates rather than new features. However, there are a few things to note. We’ll start with the MX Tweak tool, one of the many developed in-house specifically for MX Linux. It combines a variety of small yet often used Xfce customizations. Now, MX Tweak adds new options to its arsenal, namely the ability to disable Bluetooth adapters and putting Xfce file dialog buttons to the bottom of the dialog rather than the top. Another MX Linux-specific utility, MX Updater, can now use Nala, an increasingly popular frontend for the APT command. On top of that, MX Cleanup, which offers several easy actions to check and increase hard drive space, now includes a kernel cleanup tool. We won’t forget to highlight that MX Installer has received several bug fixes and improvements, and a UEFI management tool has been included in MX Boot Options. Last, the main MX Linux’s Xfce, Fluxbox, and KDE editions have a Linux kernel update to version 5.10. Furthermore, the AHS release now uses kernel 5.18 and an updated linux-firmware package. For those not in the know, MX Linux AHS (Advanced Hardware Support) is a special software repo that allows users to install things like new graphics stack and firmware, as well as updated mesa packages and Xorg drivers. Download So, if you want to download the MX Linux 21.2, the links to the installation ISO images are at the bottom of the official announcement. The distro offers both 32-bit and 64-bit versions too. Unfortunately, only the KDE Plasma edition doesn’t have a 32-bit option. Of course, if you are already running MX Linux 21, there is no need to reinstall. MX Linux tornou ambientes de desktop e gerenciadores de janelas disponíveis por meio do instalador de pacotes desde o início dos tempos (bem, desde 2014). Mas esses são pacotes de instalação básicos, essencialmente inalterados para uso no MX Linux. Esse padrão mudou com o lançamento em 12 de dezembro de 2019 do MX-fluxbox, uma versão do fluxbox desenvolvida especificamente como uma sobreposição totalmente integrada para MX Linux (versões 17 e posteriores). O Fluxbox é pequeno, rápido e um prazer de se ver. Quando o usuário efetua login, a área de trabalho é ativada em um piscar de olhos. O padrão é quase vazio: um papel de parede impressionante da coleção “mxfb”, uma barra de ferramentas na parte superior e um link para as perguntas frequentes detalhadas no canto superior esquerdo.
